Soaring over two miles above sea level in the Andes Mountains and nicknamed
the "Tibet of South America," Bolivia is known for its great
heights. It is home to the highest capital city, La Paz, as well as Lake
Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. The mountains provide
a beautiful backdrop for the biodiversity below, which includes flourishing
rainforests, spectacular waterfalls, shimmering lakes, and intriguing
wildlife.
Bolivia is also one of the most indigenous countries in South America—over
half of the population is native and about thirty percent is of mixed
native and European ancestry. Native religions, languages, and customs
prevail in rural areas, but it is not unusual to see women in brightly-colored
traditional dress even in the larger cities. With one of the smallest
populations in South America and very little tourism, the unique country
of Bolivia is a well-kept secret.
