Sucre is a beautiful colonial town nestled in the Andean
highlands of Bolivia. Known as the "White City of the Americas”
because of its many picturesque whitewashed buildings, Sucre
was the original capital of the country. It is also home to
one of the oldest universities in the Americas, and is known
as a center of progressive thought within Bolivia. Because
of its rich history and wealth of historical architecture,
the city has been designated a UNESCO (United Nations Educational,
Scientific, & Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site.
A trip to Sucre offers a true cultural immersion experience.
The town itself and nearby villages have a sizable indigenous
population, most of whom maintain traditional customs and
dress. Visitors are immediately attracted to the local markets
where food, textiles, and other products are bartered. The
small town of 150,000 residents is also easy to explore on
foot, as many of the charming plazas, shops, museums, bars,
and restaurants are within walking distance. In addition,
the area has successfully avoided an excess of tourists, giving
those who visit a true glimpse into Bolivian culture.
