Rio de Janeiro |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
With white sandy beaches in one direction, lush green mountains in another, and the famous Christ Redeemer statue perched above it all, Rio de Janeiro is one ofthe most spectacular cities in the world. And that's just the view! Add the friendliness of the locals, the laid-back atmosphere, and the sultry tropical climate, and you'll soon see why they call Rio "A CidadeMaravilhosa" (the Marvelous City).
Rio's distinctive allure attracts visitors year-round, but the city is at its most brilliant during the famous festivities of Carnival. In five days in late February or early March, Rio comes to a virtual standstill as parties, dancing, parades, and the music of samba fill the streets. Carnival is truly the people's festival, with everyone—"Cariocas" (Rio residents) and visitors alike—welcome to join in the fun.
Although renowned for its festive atmosphere, Rio is also the headquarters to some of Brazil's largest national and multinational companies. It is a cosmopolitan city with a wide variety of restaurants, tourist attractions, and nightlife options. Rio's relaxed atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and friendly residents make learning Portuguese in this city an unforgettable experience.

Activities and Excursions |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Our school in Rio de Janeiro offers a full schedule of activities and excursions for its Portuguese students. Every week, you are invited to learn more about Brazilian culture by attending a lecture given by a Portuguese teacher. Topics rotate and include the Brazilian economy, contemporary literature, politics, immigration, history, religion, and cuisine. You can also take advantage of the chance to practice your Portuguese with a native Brazilian, as the school arranges weekly interviews with local residents.
For those who want to discover this wonderful city while practicing their Portuguese, we offer afternoon excursions to some of the most beautiful places in Rio. All excursions are led by a Portuguese instructor. Excursions are provided as a courtesy, but students are expected to pay for their own transportation and entrance fees. Some of the excursions we offer in this marvelous city are described below.
 |
| |
|
Christ the
Redeemer Statue
Located atop the Corcovado Mountain at a height
of 710 meters, the statue of Christ the Redeemer
is certainly one of the world's best-known and most-visited
monuments. This outing begins in the Cosme Velho
District, aboard a miniature train that runs through
the steep Atlantic Rainforest up to the foot of
the statue, offering stunning glimpses of Rio from
many different angles.
|
|
| From
the top, the view is nothing short of heavenly:
Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Botanical Gardens,
the Jockey Club, and the Lagoon. The entire city
spreads out in a magnificent panorama during the
day, glittering and magical after dark, and always
protected by Christ the Redeemer, who blesses visitors
and residents from on high. |

Botanical Gardens
This excursion takes you to Rio's impressive Botanical
Gardens. Each of the garden's 141 hectares shelters
outstanding examples of plant life from Brazil and
the rest of the world. The Imperial Palms are among
its most spectacular attractions, planted in 1809
by King D. João VI.
|
|
| The garden
also boasts huge trees decked with orchids that
contrast with giant victoria-regia, lilies, bromeliads,
royal poincianas, and tropical foliage, making the
area a favorite hideaway for nature-lovers, sweethearts,
and all those seeking peace and tranquility. |

Sugar Loaf
Standing at the entrance of Guanabara Bay lies Rio's
most famous landmark: Sugar Loaf Mountain. Here
you can take one of the famous "bondinhos"
(cable cars) to the top of Morro da Urca, where
you can have a snack while admiring one of the most
beautiful views in the world. Later, they continue
the ride to the top of Sugar Loaf and you'll enjoy
a complete view of the Bay's inlet, as well as all
of southern Rio de Janeiro and its beautiful beaches.
|
|
| From
this vantage point, it is easy to understand what
makes a "Carioca" so proud to live here. |

MAM
- Modern Art Museum
During this excursion, you'll visit the Modern Art
Museum located in Flamengo Park alongside Guanabara
Bay and close to downtown. The museum was inaugurated
in 1958 and has a very unusual history. After a
disastrous fire in 1978, hundreds of people from
all over the world flocked to rebuild this cultural
treasure, helping to repair the building and replace
its collections.
|
|
| The MAM
currently houses some 1,700 works including paintings,
sculptures and engravings by Brazilian and foreign
artists. It also holds a specialized art library
and a well-known cinemathèque that is among
the most popular in town. |

of European immigrants and African slaves. This
incredible mix has made Brazil a fascinating country
with very rich historical and artistic roots.

A 2-hour lecture on Brazilian history
2 guided visits to the most important museums
and historical sites in Rio de Janeiro, accompanied

the National History Museum, the Museu Nacional
de Belas Artes and the Republic Museum, just to
name a few.
Additional weeks include 20 hours of group Portuguese
class, one 2-hour lecture (either on a different
period of Brazilian history or a more in-depth
study of the same periods) and two guided visits
to museums per week, accompanied by your Portuguese
teacher. This is ideal for students who want a
more complete experience, as it will allow you
to discover some of the lesser-known, but equally
interesting museums of the city. Of course, we
always try to tailor the visits to your particular

”I arrived
at Bridge-Linguatec with no knowledge of Portuguese and
within two weeks I had grasped a basic understanding of
the language. On a daily basis the instructors are evaluating
you progress and requirements. The instructors are extremely
helpful. I have thoroughly enjoyed my two weeks at Bridge-Linguatec
in Rio de Janeiro. The atmosphere is very friendly and
comfortable. I would have no doubt in recommending them
to others.”

”Everyone
is extremely friendly and helpful. In fact, I've never
felt so comfortable with the staff in any other language
school I've been to. It's a very personal atmosphere,
very good! I liked the small classes because the lessons
were really individual. Actually I'm sad that those three
weeks passed so fast and I hope I can come back in Bridge-Linguatec
again one day.”

“The curriculum
was very helpful for teaching students in more than one
way. I liked that at times we focused on grammar, other
times vocabulary, and other times current events. This
enabled the classes to flow very naturally. My Portuguese
improved miraculously.”

"I had
an excellent experience at Bridge-Linguatec in Rio. The
classes were so good I think I could have done full days.
I was afraid that would be too boring, but now I know
it can't be! The rotation of instructors is an excellent
idea, and the methodology is very good! My Portuguese
improved considerably" in just one-week. I would
definitely recommend Bridge-Linguatec in Rio!"

“Each
of the instructors I had was excellent in their own way.
Everyone was extremely encouraging and used novel means
to make learning Portuguese interesting and at the same
time fun. The staff are extremely friendly and dedicated
to your progress. They are enthusiastic about what they
do and it showed in the classroom and outside when we
went on excursions.”

“Probably
the best well-organized Portuguese school in Rio. Very

”My Portuguese
has improved a lot in one week. I was a total beginner,
and now I can communicate to people at school in the language.
My teachers have been as helpful as I wanted them to be
in introducing me to the local language and culture. I
would definitely recommend my host family. They're great!
I would recommend Bridge-Linguatec for the simple fact
that here you're going to learn a lot of Portuguese.”
