Portuguese
& History
The only Latin American country colonized by the
Portuguese, Brazil is blessed with a unique heritage
in the world. The nation was also influenced by
the French and the Dutch, not to mention large waves
of European immigrants and African slaves. This
incredible mix has made Brazil a fascinating country
with very rich historical and artistic roots.
And
as the country’s former capital and most
famous city, Rio de Janeiro makes a great place
to explore Brazil’s history and culture.
The following activities are included
in Week One of the program:
20 hours of group Portuguese class (6 students
maximum)
A 2-hour lecture on Brazilian history
2 guided visits to the most important museums
and historical sites in Rio de Janeiro, accompanied
by your Portuguese instructor. Museums include
the National History Museum, the Museu Nacional
de Belas Artes and the Republic Museum, just to
name a few.
Additional weeks include 20 hours of group Portuguese
class, one 2-hour lecture (either on a different
period of Brazilian history or a more in-depth
study of the same periods) and two guided visits
to museums per week, accompanied by your Portuguese
teacher. This is ideal for students who want a
more complete experience, as it will allow you
to discover some of the lesser-known, but equally
interesting museums of the city. Of course, we
always try to tailor the visits to your particular
interests. Get ready to discover Brazil through
its history and art!
