Flamingo |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Playa Flamingo (Flamingo Beach) is located in the province of
Guanacaste on Costa Rica’s Pacific Gold Coast, and boasts
one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. With its unspoiled
white sand, crystal blue water, and luxurious homes nestled
in the tropical vegetation, Flamingo is postcard-perfect. It
remains one of our most popular study abroad destinations. And
though Flamingo does not represent its namesake—you won’t
see any of the exotic pink birds here—you will see other
amazing Costa Rican wildlife, such as sea turtles, manta rays,
sharks, and devilfish.
Flamingo is 47 miles (76 km) southwest of the city of Liberia
and is the only full-service marina between Acapulco and Panama
on the Central American Pacific coast. There is never a lack
of outdoor activities in Flamingo, and the people of this town
are more than happy to help you discover them.
You can visit the local nature reserves of Santa Rosa and Palo
Verde, classified as dry tropical forests, ride horses along
the beach or in the surrounding mountains, or visit Guaitil,
a local community dedicated to the production of artisan ceramics—just
to name a few options. Flamingo is also perfect for swimming,
snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, sailing, or just relaxing
in the sun.
There are also a few bars, nightclubs, and hotel casinos open
late for those who enjoy the nightlife. Flamingo’s ideal
atmosphere, friendly people, and abundance of recreational activities
will make you think twice about leaving, but not about returning.

Canopy Tour
This tour starts at the forest edge and after a
short hike, you climb to the first of a series of
platforms that are 20 to 30 meters high. After being
harnessed to cables, you traverse along the forest
canopy for a bird’s eye view of the magnificent
rainforest. This trip provides amazing photo opportunities
and the chance to see some of Costa Rica’s

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano
An active volcano only two hours from Flamingo,
Rincon de la Vieja is known for its hot water and
mud pools at the volcano base. During this guided
tour the group learns about the vegetation and animal
life native to this ecosystem while hiking along
trails near the volcano.
|
|
Santa Rosa National Park
The excursion to Rincon de la Vieja can be extended
with a trip to Santa Rosa National Park. After you
visit the Rincón, you will spend the evening
in Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste, and in the
morning the group leaves for Santa Rosa. Classified
as a dry forest, Santa Rosa is Costa Rica's first
national park and offers a selection of hiking trails
within the forest (some lead to the coastline where
visitors can swim in the crystal blue waters of
the Pacific). In addition to over 250 species of
birds, animals seen in the reserve include: deer,
anteaters, over 50 species of bats, and howler,
spider and white-faced monkeys. Within the park
is La Casona, a museum rich with historical importance;
it was here where Costa Rica defended its independence
against the North American colonizer, William Walker. |

The following
day, the group will participate in the Sky Trek,
a fascinating combination of canopy tour and a hanging

Lesley Wilson

|
| “I really
feel that I made a lot of progress in my time [in Costa
Rica]. The first week was particularly good in light of
me not speaking Spanish. I got a good base immediately.
My homestay was brilliant. They immediately made me feel
part of the family and talked to me all the time. Food
was always varied and plentiful and they accommodated
my being vegetarian.” |
Mike Stepp
USA |
|
| “This
is a great place to study Spanish. I’ve studied
in several different schools in Mexico, Guatemala, Costa
Rica and Paraguay. This is by far the best school I have
seen. The students’ needs come first. The owner
and her family try to make their students’ language
learning vacations as pleasant and productive as possible.
They see that the class size remains small and that each
student receives personal attention. I’ve been to
other schools that seem to lose interest in their students
after they pay the tuition.” |
Micheline Babinski
Canada |
|
“I spent one week
in Heredia, one week in Playa Flamingo and one week
in Monteverde, all were like small paradises. They were
all beyond my expectations. The people I met were all
wonderful people: students, teachers and above all Costa
Ricans—kind, affectionate and always happy."
