Heredia |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Heredia is located north of Costa Rica’s capital, San
José, and is a popular location for those who enjoy the
amenities of a large city, but prefer to be away from its hectic
environment. Heredia is a charming area of Costa Rica that does
not have many tourists or English speakers, so you can truly
gain an insight into Costa Rican culture and get to know its
people, typically known as "Ticos."
Heredia is most famous for its national parks, volcanoes, and
coffee plantations. The national parks of Tapantí and
Braulio Carrillo will give you an opportunity to view natural
wildlife (you might even glimpse a quetzal, Central America’s
most significant bird). Active adventurers can discover volcanoes
Poás and Barva, the former of which is still active.
And you won’t want to miss Heredia’s coffee plantations.
The city is surrounded by them and you can still find farmers
loading ox-carts with coffee beans. Heredia was once considered
the coffee capital of Costa Rica.
Founded in 1706, Heredia is known as the “City of Flowers,”
because of its many gardens and lush flora and fauna. Nestled
among the vegetation, the downtown area is very colonial and
charming, and you will find historic churches next to small
restaurants and shops. In the heart of the town lies the local
university, which gives the city a youthful and energetic feel,
despite its small size. Most of the city’s 50,000 inhabitants
are young Ticos.

feel, primarily due to the presence of the local
university and the college students that make up
most of the population. |

Activities and Excursions |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Every week, the Heredia school offers a comprehensive activities
and excursions program through which you can learn more about
Heredia, San José, Costa Rica, and Tico culture. Regularly
scheduled activities include dance classes, city tours, lectures,
cooking classes, and fiestas. The school also organizes interesting
excursions around Costa Rica, like trips to Tortuguero National
Park, Rio Pacuare for rafting, and the famous "volcanes" (volcanoes).
 |
| |
|
Volcán Arenal
This weekend excursion takes you to the active Arenal
Volcano. For more than 10 years, the Arenal Volcano
has been active every day. In the evening, you will
visit the volcano, where you can see glowing, red
lava ooze from its peak. Eruptions can even be seen
from close proximity, but a safe distance away,
of course.
|
|
| This is
a breathtaking natural spectacle that will surely
linger in your memory. You will top off the excursion
with a visit to the nearby hot springs. |

Tortuguero National Park
Located in the northeast part of Costa Rica's Atlantic
Coast, the Tortuguero National Park definitely lives
up to its name. In addition to its abundant flora
and fauna, it is one of the most important nesting
sites for the green turtle ("tortuga" in Spanish
means "turtle"). After a lovely drive through the
Braulio Carillo National Park, you will take a two
hour boat trip to Tortuguero.
|
|
| While
on the boat trip, you will be sure to catch a peek
at monkeys, caimans, toucans, parrots, and several
other types of birds. From a distance you can also
see the nesting areas of giant turtles as they lay
their eggs during the months of September and October. |

Canopy Tours
A canopy tour is one of the most popular and exciting
things to do in Costa Rica. High up in the rainforest
one gets an opportunity to see the country's unique
ecosystem, as well as experience the exhilaration
of zipping from treetop to treetop.

Tortuguero National Park
This afternoon excursion begins in Braulio Carillo
National Park where you will first take a guided
hike through the park, learning about the various
trees, plants, and animals. Then you will have the
opportunity to traverse the park in a gondola that
rises above tree level.
From this
incredible vantage point you have an indescribable
view of the park and Costa Rica's natural beauty
in all its splendor. |
