Heredia is located north of Costa Rica’s capital, San
José, and is a popular location for those who enjoy the
amenities of a large city, but prefer to be away from its hectic
environment. Heredia is a charming area of Costa Rica that does
not have many tourists or English speakers, so you can truly
gain an insight into Costa Rican culture and get to know its
people, typically known as "Ticos."
Heredia is most famous for its national parks, volcanoes, and
coffee plantations. The national parks of Tapantí and
Braulio Carrillo will give you an opportunity to view natural
wildlife (you might even glimpse a quetzal, Central America’s
most significant bird). Active adventurers can discover volcanoes
Poás and Barva, the former of which is still active.
And you won’t want to miss Heredia’s coffee plantations.
The city is surrounded by them and you can still find farmers
loading ox-carts with coffee beans. Heredia was once considered
the coffee capital of Costa Rica.
Founded in 1706, Heredia is known as the “City of Flowers,”
because of its many gardens and lush flora and fauna. Nestled
among the vegetation, the downtown area is very colonial and
charming, and you will find historic churches next to small
restaurants and shops. In the heart of the town lies the local
university, which gives the city a youthful and energetic feel,
despite its small size. Most of the city’s 50,000 inhabitants
are young Ticos.
Three Good Reasons
to Study Spanish in Heredia

San José gives you the conveniences of city
life without actually living in the city.
Heredia has a young, energetic
feel, primarily due to the presence of the local
university and the college students that make up
most of the population.
Heredia is relatively tourist-free,
giving you a true immersion experience.
Heredia has a comfortable climate year-round
of 75°F (24°C). Due to the altitude, nights are
cooler and temperatures are about 65°F (18°C).
During the rainy season, May-December, it often rains
in the afternoon.
