Monteverde is a cherished region of Costa Rica, world-famous
for its incredible eco-tourism and successful efforts in environmental
conservation. Located in northwestern Costa Rica about a four-hour
bus ride from the capital city of San José, the Monteverde
zone is situated on the continental divide at an elevation
of 5,600 feet. The town of Monteverde—one of ten towns
in the region—successfully maintains an indigenous charm
with rustic dirt roads and delightful restaurants serving
a delicious selection of food and drink. It also holds a yearly
music festival in January, which features musical groups from
all over Latin America.
Monteverde means "Green Mountain" in Spanish, and the area
definitely lives up to its name. One of the most interesting
and popular destinations in Costa Rica is the renowned Monteverde
Cloud Forest, in which our school is located. This natural
sanctuary boasts lush green vegetation (90% of which is virgin
forest) and offers abundant opportunities for hiking, bird
watching, and discovering wildlife. In fact, the Monteverde
Cloud Forest has hundreds of species of mammals, birds, insects,
and plants, including five species of cats, 30 kinds of hummingbirds,
over 5000 species of butterflies, and 420 kinds of orchids.
