Quaint fishing villages, colonial cities,
colorful markets, and picture-perfect haciendas set the stage for an
unforgettable cultural immersion experience. In Ecuador, a blend of cultures and
traditions are packed in to a compact, yet geographically rich country. Ecuador’s
natural beauty includes the spectacular Amazon Rainforest, magnificent Incan ruins,
and one of the most famous ecological wonders on the planet: the Galapagos
Islands.
With a diverse ethnic makeup of indigenous, European, and African ancestry,
Ecuador is a land of sharp cultural contrasts. The native populations in the highlands
and Amazon jungle preserve ancient traditions through music, art, and rituals, with
some still speaking the ancient tongue of the Incas. The coastal lowlands are home
to half of the country's population, which is mostly mestizo and the descendants
of African slaves, now famous for their lively music and dance festivals. Though
these cultures intermingle, each strives to maintain its own identity; and given
Ecuador's small size, it is impossible not to come in contact with various unique
cultures within a small area.
