Quito |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Located in the inter-Andean valley, Quito is a city of sun and
sky surrounded by mountains, with three snow-capped volcanoes
in view on clear days. Due to its high altitude and close proximity
to the equator, the city has a climate that is likened to “eternal
spring.” Slightly over a million people live in Quito
and the city has plenty to offer culturally: theater, concerts,
folk music clubs, “salsotecas,” bookstores, museums,
art galleries, and antique stores.
Despite its position as the national capital, Quito has managed
to hang on to its small-town feel. The city is rich in traditional
culture and indigenous life, and is easy to navigate on foot.
A modern South American capital with strong indigenous roots,
Quito makes an excellent place to learn Spanish.

Three Good Reasons
to Study Spanish in Quito |
|
|
| |
 |
Quito’s location makes it
ideal for accessing most other areas of the country,
including beaches, mountains, and the Amazon basin. |
|
| |
|
|
|
| |
 |
Quito retains a small-city atmosphere
because it is pedestrian-friendly. In addition,
distances between Quito and nearby cities are short
and the bus system is quite extensive. |
|
| |
|
|
|
| |
 |
The city of Quito is considered
one of the least expensive capital cities in the
world, so your money will go far. |

Quito Weather |
|
|
|
 |
Ecuador’s weather is surprisingly
moderate year-round, due to its location near the equator
and its high altitude. It has a daily average temperature
of about 65ºF (18ºC), with daytime highs around
75ºF (24ºC), and early morning lows around 45ºF
(7ºC). The climate at this altitude in the Andes
includes all four seasons each day because of the wide
variation in temperature. |

Activities and Excursions |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Each week the Quito schools offer many different activities
and excursions to make your stay in Ecuador both enjoyable and
culturally rich.
 |
| |
|
Otavalo
The city of Otavalo is north of Quito right off
the Panamericana Highway and is one of the most
well-known towns in Ecuador. Every Saturday Otavalo
hosts a famous Indian market where hundreds of Ecuadorians
open their stands to the local tourists to sell
various souvenirs such as ponchos, traditional costumes,
rucksacks, jewelry, or hammocks.
|
|
|
|
| |
|
|
|
 |
 |
| |
|
Saquisilí
The Indian market of Saquisilí is not as large as
the market of Otavalo, but is more traditional.
The market is frequented mainly by Ecuadorians and
therefore offers an ideal opportunity to witness
the local culture. One particular highlight of Saquisilí
is the animal market, in which one can purchase
anything from a pig to a llama.

Equatorial
Monument
Just 16 miles (25 km) north of Quito is the Equator,
or the "Mitad del Mundo" (middle of the world).
This significant point of interest is marked by
the Equatorial Monument which stands 100 feet high
and is situated in the exact middle of the world
at a latitude of 0°. Here you can stand with one
foot in each hemisphere! Inside the monument is
the Ethnographic Museum, which describes the different
Native American groups living in Ecuador.
|
|
| Beside
the monument there is a colonial-style town, complete
with a main square, church, post office, bullring,
restaurants and many gift shops with postcards and
souvenirs. After the Equator excursion, you will
visit the nearby Inca ruins of Rumicucho. These
ruins are one of the few places in the country where
one can view well-kept remains of the Inca Empire. |

Papallacta
Hot Springs
The hot springs of Papallacta are located two and
a half hours from Quito in a picturesque Andean
valley 10,800 feet above sea level. Here you can
relax in the various pools which are directly fed
with water of volcanic origin, and enjoy the magnificent
views.

Baños
This weekend trip takes you to the charming village
of Baños. Lying at the foot of the Tungurahua Volcano
and surrounded by the magnificent Andes Mountains,
this picturesque town offers a wide range of sporting
and entertainment opportunities. On horseback you
can discover the majestic Andes, or during a bike
tour you can take a refreshing bath at one of the
many waterfalls.
|
|
| The city
is also a religious point of interest for Roman
Catholics, as some say the Virgin Mary appeared
in a nearby waterfall. A sculpture of the virgin,
called "La Virgen de Agua Santa," was placed in
the city's cathedral. |

Cotopaxi
National Park
This national park stretches around the famous Cotopaxi
Volcano, an 18,700-foot peak and home to a rich
diversity of animal and plant species. At 15,800
feet, just below the snow-capped summit, lies a
mountain station to which most hikers stop and enjoy
the incredible view before heading back down. More
adventurous types have the option of climbing all
the way to the top.

| "I had a great time and
the five weeks passed too quickly. The classes were great
and we had a lot of fun with the teachers. There was a
great atmosphere in the school and everybody had a good
time. On the weekends I did some fantastic trips with
some of the other students and interns. I can only recommend
the school to everyone and I would like to come back as
soon as possible! Thanks again for the great time!" |

| "My family
was great! They treated me as part of the family and the
food was good and varied. The tuition met my high expectations
and I got to know a lot during the cultural programs (the
museum visits and the explorations of Quito). The weekend
excursions to Baños and Otavalo with the other students
were very enjoyable." |

enjoyed my stay here in Quito and I am very sorry that
I have to go home now. My teachers were really good and
I had a great time with my family. The different activities
of the cultural program were especially good! Thanks for
everything." |

| "Some friends had visited
the school a few years ago. It was a really good idea
to follow their advice and come here. I had a great time
and I will definitely come back. Classes were great fun
and would never have imagined that I could learn Spanish
that quickly and easily. The conversations with my lovely
family helped me a lot." |

| "I surely liked the classes
and all the people were really nice. Everything was perfectly
organized and I got great tips from the school and from
other students about what to see and do in Ecuador. I
especially enjoyed the trip to the Indian market in Saquisilí,
which we did with all students, and one teacher who gave
us interesting explanations and a good insight into the
Indian culture." |

| "A friend of mine had been
to the school before and the advised me to choose it.
I loved the time in Quito and will definitely try to come
back! The dance classes with Melie and the tuition with
Maria were great." |

| "Before starting my trip
to Ecuador I had some doubts whether a language course,
especially in South America, would be the right thing
for someone of my age. Now all my doubts seem ridiculous.
The school organized everything very professionally and
I didn't miss anything. The teachers were great and they
adapted the classes to my slower learning speed. I had
a great time with my family and we visited many places
together." |
