Students in Guadalajara are given the opportunity to learn more
about the culture through a variety of activities and excursions.
The school provides activities free of charge; some take place
on campus, others in the city, and yet others in the homes of
host families. All are conducted in Spanish, allowing you to
learn about the culture and practice the language at the same
time.
In order to discover the fascinating city and country in which
you are studying, excursions are also organized both in and
out of the city. There is a small additional charge for these
excursions to cover the cost of transportation and the tour
guide. Some of the activities and excursions offered by the
school are listed below.
Language
and Cultural Exchange Group
The Language and Cultural Exchange Group is made
up of Mexican students studying English and foreign
students studying Spanish. Students take turns practicing
language and sharing their culture. This activity
provides a real cultural and linguistic exchange—and
the perfect opportunity to make international friends!
Focused
Conversations
Daily lectures on various topics are presented and
then followed by group discussion. The group uses
a variety of media, including movies, CD ROMS, slide
shows, and more. Topics covered include the history
and culture of Guadalajara, the history and culture
of Mexico, the Aztecs, and Mexican holidays such
as the Day of the Dead. These conversations are
a great way to practice your Spanish while learning
more about the culture of Mexico.
City Tours
Guided city tours are a great way to experience
Guadalajara’s beautiful architecture, historical
buildings and other attractions. A tour guide
will take you to a variety of important sites
of interest around the city, pointing out the
historic and cultural significance of each. Both
walking and bus tours are available several times
per week during the summer months.
Mexican
Cooking
In a unique and entertaining activity, the school
encourages host families to teach students to prepare
a traditional Mexican meal. First, you’ll
select a dish from a Mexican recipe guide, and then
your host family will provide all the ingredients,
support, and encouragement to help you make a traditional
feast. Then, you can take these skills back home
and delight your friends!
Salsa
Lessons
Salsa is a dance that reflects the joy and abandon
of warm tropical days. This activity has been extremely
popular because you have the chance to mingle with
both local English students and foreign Spanish
students. These lessons are also very flexible:
since all skill levels run in parallel during the
class, you don't have to attend consecutive lessons.
Practice your Spanish and join in the fun every
Thursday evening!
Karaoke
Club
Meet local students in the school auditorium for
an evening of singing the tunes of Cielito Lindo,
Besame Mucho, Guadalajara and many of the memorable
songs that have made Guadalajaran (Tapatío)
singers legends of traditional Mexican folk songs.
Of course, modern Mexican and English songs are
also available. A professional music instructor
conducts this event every Wednesday evening.
Guitar
Lessons
The school offers guitar lessons two evenings per
week. Lessons are conducted on campus, and students
must either bring their own guitar or rent one in
the city. Lessons will consist of many of the most
traditional Mexican ballads and songs. If you've
always wanted to learn guitar, this is the perfect
opportunity, and like all school activities, it
is completely free!
Ceramic
Crafts
The school works with a local ceramics institute
that can give you pointers on how to create your
own ceramic works of art. Classes are held in the
afternoons and you may attend as long as you wish
during the class hours.

Lake
Chapala and Ajijíc

located 30 miles southeast of Guadalajara. A visit
to the towns and villages along the shore is a truly
memorable experience. The town of Chapala boasts
a beautiful church and pier, Chulavista is a beautiful
American residential colony, and Ajijic is an old
rustic town with craft shops, handmade rugs, clothing,
leather goods, and silver jewelry. The tour takes
approximately six hours and is available three days
