Playa del Carmen is a big-time beach destination with a small-town atmosphere. Located on Mexico’s Mayan Riviera just south of Cancun, Playa (as it is called locally) attracts visitors from all over the world. With shores that meet the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, long stretches of white sand beaches, and palm trees that sway in the breeze, Playa is unmatched in beauty.

As day turns into night, students can take advantage of the area’s plentiful after-class (or after-beach) options. Playa is home to a variety of restaurants offering both traditional and international cuisine, as well as to many bars and discos that will keep you entertained all night long. And if it’s a dose of culture you’re looking for, Playa won’t disappoint. One of the town’s claims to fame is its proximity to significant Mayan archeological sites such as Tulúm, Cobá, and the famous Chichén Itzá. Playa del Carmen’s beautiful location, cultural and social activities, and laid-back, friendly atmosphere makes it an excellent place to study Spanish and enjoy the richness of Mexico.

Three Good Reasons to Study in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen has incredible beaches and warm, crystal-clear ocean waters, ideal for water sports or beach activities—and the schools are just blocks away from it all.
Thatched-roof outdoor classrooms provide a unique learning environment.
Playa del Carmen is a nice alternative to its neighbor, Cancún, with far fewer tourists and a more relaxed, laid-back atmosphere.

Playa del Carmen has a subtropical climate, which means it's almost always warm—or hot. The annual average temperature is about 80º F (27ºC). All year-round, the humidity level is very high, often around 90%. The ocean is always warm enough to swim in. Spring (February-May) has very little rain. Nights can be cool, but a sweater is rarely called for. Summer (June-August) is hot with a few showers. Fall (Sept.-Oct.) has more persistent rain, though it is still warm. Winter (Nov.- Jan.) has the coolest temperatures of the year, making it very comfortable. Nights at this time of year can be chilly and it rains occasionally.
