Tetouan is a majestic city of whitewashed buildings situated
on the Mediterranean coast near the Rif Mountains. The school
is located in the historic Spanish quarter, overlooking the
town’s most beautiful public square.
The history of Tetouan—including its use as a military
base, Mediterranean port, pirate’s lair, and sanctuary
for Muslim and Jewish refugees from Andalusia, Spain—is
evident in its architecture. Of particular interest are a fort,
mosques, city walls, and the Khalifa’s 17th-century palace.
Arabic is the official language here, but Spanish and French
are commonly used as well.
The population approaches a million residents in Tetouan’s
metropolitan area. Each downtown city street is occupied by
one trade or another—weavers, dyers, jewellers, and leather
workers can all be seen. Women often come from the surrounding
country, wearing brightly colored clothing and wide straw hats,
to sell honey, butter, vegetables, and herbs. Rich in culture,
history, and natural beauty, Tetouan is a captivating place
to learn Arabic.
