Tetouan |
| |
|
| |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Tetouan is a majestic city of whitewashed buildings situated on the Mediterranean coast near the Rif Mountains. The school is located in the historic Spanish quarter, overlooking the town’s most beautiful public square.
The history of Tetouan—including its use as a military base, Mediterranean port, pirate’s lair, and sanctuary for Muslim and Jewish refugees from Andalusia, Spain—is evident in its architecture. Of particular interest are a fort, mosques, city walls, and the Khalifa’s 17th-century palace. Arabic is the official language here, but Spanish and French are commonly used as well.
The population approaches a million residents in Tetouan’s metropolitan area. Each downtown city street is occupied by one trade or another—weavers, dyers, jewellers, and leather workers can all be seen. Women often come from the surrounding country, wearing brightly colored clothing and wide straw hats, to sell honey, butter, vegetables, and herbs. Rich in culture, history, and natural beauty, Tetouan is a captivating place to learn Arabic.

| "I chose
Morocco over other Arab countries by chance, but I’m
so glad because the people made me feel so welcome and
the culture is truly fascinating. The people here are
amazing. I felt as if they would do anything to help me
have a good experience. I was here for a short time, but
they helped me make the most of it." |

|
| "Before
coming to Morocco, I thought that I would have to pretend
to be Canadian to be safe. What I found out is that Moroccans
love Americans. I received no problem or hostility in
more than 3 months in Morocco. The people were very nice.
At the school, I had a great teacher who made a very difficult
language fun and interesting. I learned as much in Morocco
in 3 months as I did in a year at home." |
Toshiro Sugiama

|
| "I had great time and
good lessons at the school. In such a short time I felt
a huge improvement of my Arabic. The teachers and staff
of the school supported me very well. I chose studying
Arabic in Morocco because it is safer than other Mid-east
countries and people are very friendly. Tetouan is very
nice and different from other Moroccan cities. It is a
great environment to study Arabic." |

friendly, caring, and helpful staff--and great meals in
the cafeteria." |
