The Dominican Republic is a geographical gem in the crystal waters of
the Caribbean. As the second-largest country in the Caribbean, the island
is blessed with diverse geography. It is fringed by hundreds of miles
of white sandy beaches, and palm trees line the simple streets of the
few coastal resorts. Further inland, much of the the country's remaining
lush vegetatation has been preserved by the government.
The country shares the tropical island of Hispaniola with Haiti, and is
characterized by a lively mix of cultures from indigenous inhabitants
and later immigrants to the area. Dominicans have European, Native American
and African roots, and the beauty of this mix can be seen all over the
island. The colorful combination of cultures is expressed in the country's
music, dance, and the national sport of baseball, all of which are appreciated
with energetic enthusiasm. Dominicans are known to be especially friendly
and hospitable to foreigners, and visitors can expect to make fast friends
with the locals.
