The school in Santo Domingo offers a variety of activities in
which to participate. There is a weekly garden BBQ party, and
on-site Bachata and Merengue dance lessons. The school also
organizes outdoor activities such as volleyball, mini golf,
shopping trips, and local museum visits.
For explorations further afield, students have the opportunity
to take day or weekend trips. The Dominican Republic's large
geographic variety allows you to go to the coast, mountains,
and further inland all within a day's time.
El
Choco National Park
Bordered by the Septentrional Mountains and the
Cabarete Lagoon, this park is home to numerous natural
wonders. It offers cave exploration, jungle hikes,
bike trails, lagoon visits, and the chance to see
tropical animals, especially birds. This area is
particularly unique because of the oddly-shaped
hills at the foot of the mountains, which are actually
ancient coral reefs, exposed because of the earth's
shifting patterns.
Playa
Grande and Laguna Gri-Gri
Considered one of the best beaches in the country,
gorgeous Playa Grande has long stretches of soft
white sand and is bordered by lush green tropical
forests. Nearby is the Playa Grande Golf Course,
which has been called the Pebble Beach of the Caribbean.
On this excursion, you'll also have the opportunity
to take a boat trip to Laguna Gri-Gri, a nearby
freshwater lagoon.
Punta
Rusia and Cayo Arena
Located on the north coast of the country, this
lovely beach and nearby island are pristine areas
relatively untouched by tourism. Visitors continue
to absorb the local culture while preserving the
area’s fragile ecosystem and taking advantage
of the fantastic weather and outdoor water and sporting
opportunities.
Jarabacoa
This city is located in the heart of the central
mountain range and is less than an hour from Santo
Domingo. It is known for its mountain adventure
options, from kayaking and white-water rafting to
mountain horseback riding and hiking Pico Duarte—the
highest peak in the Caribbean. Besides the outdoor
activities, Jarabacoa is a bustling city with nightly
baseball games, numerous restaurants, and endless
shopping opportunities.
Las
Terrenas
The hilly roads of the northern coast give way to
a long stretch of fantastic, clean, white-sand beaches.
Less developed than the Dominican's other beach
resorts, Las Terrenas reflects the beauty and simplicity
of island life. In certain seasons, you can walk
out to the coral reefs in low tide and possibly
see an Eastern Humpback whale.
