Santo Domingo is considered to be the oldest city in the New World, the place where settlement for all of the Americas began. The capital of the Dominican Republic, it boasts the western hemisphere’s first cathedral, first monastery, first hospital, first university, and first court of law. The heart of this history is found in the Zona Colonial (Colonial Zone), where visitors can experience Spanish colonial architecture on the same cobblestone streets that were laid in the early 1600’s. You can visit a sidewalk café and admire century-old monuments like the Alcázar de Colon or Las Ruinas del Monasterio de San Francisco. Recognizing its importance in history, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, & Cultural Organization) has declared the Colonial City of Santo Domingo a World Heritage site.

Beyond its well-preserved past, Santo Domingo is also an enchantingly modern and cultural city. As a Caribbean metropolis, the city will seduce you with its vibrant nightlife, exceptional dining, and marvelous shopping. In this cosmopolitan atmosphere, you can expect to find a distinctive mix of Spanish, African, and Latin traditions. A perfect blend of modern sophistication and historical charm sets the scene for a great location in which to learn Spanish.
