El
Escorial and the Valley of Fallen
Just a short jaunt from Madrid is the majestic monastery-palace
San Lorenzo de El Escorial. The political center
of the empire of King Philip II, the immense structure
also houses a basilica, a royal library and a pantheon
containing the remains of the King as well as those
of his parents, relatives and successors. |
|
| In the
afternoon you'll take a bus to the nearby Valley
of the Fallen, a massive monument to the victims
of the Spanish Civil War. A giant granite cross
sits high atop a rock outcropping, starkly marking
the burial place of soldiers who fought on both
sides of the Civil War, as well as that of reviled
dictator Francisco Franco. |

Granada
This excursion takes students to the city of Granada
in the southern region of Andalusia. For over three
centuries of Muslim domination of the country, Granada
was the greatest city on the peninsula. Although
wrested away by the Christians during the Reconquest,
"The Moorish Jewel" remains one of the
finest remnants of Spain's Islamic past. |
|
| Most
notable is the dazzling Alhambra Palace, a marvel
of Moorish architecture, designated World Heritage
Site, and tourist attraction that should not be
missed. |

Bilbao
Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque Country,
a historically and linguistically independent region
near the French border. Once primarily a colorless
industrial center, Bilbao has recently been transformed
in a wave of bold urban-renewal projects. The most
important event to put Bilbao back on the world
map was the monumental opening of the Guggenheim
Museum. |
|
| Thanks
to the city's lively new attitude and the friendly
nature of the Basque people, this two-day trip to
Bilbao is sure to be fun. |

Picos
de Europa
The Picos de Europa, a rugged mountain range just
off the Atlantic coast in northern Spain, is the
setting for this off-the-beaten-path hiking adventure.
An outdoor-lover's paradise, the Picos rise to nearly
9,000 feet and offer striking views of limestone
spires, jagged peaks, green valleys, and isolated
villages that seem to have been lost to time. |
|
| The distinct
Celtic influence in this area is a world away from
the rest of Spain. You're more likely to hear bagpipe
music than flamenco, and you're sure to sample a
glass of sidra (a local fermented apple drink) and
other regional specialties like cabrales, a powerful
"blue" goat cheese. |

Toledo
Toledo, an easy excursion from Madrid, is one of
the country's most magnificent historical centers.
In contrast to much of the rest of Spain, it once
provided a rare example of Jews, Christians and
Muslims living side by side. On this
trip, students will experience the intact medieval
city surrounded by colossal walls, crisscrossed
by narrow winding streets and dotted with fascinating
galleries, synagogues, churches, and castles. |
|
| The
nation's capital until the 1500s, Toledo has such
a wealth of medieval architecture that you'll feel
like you stepped back into the Middle Ages. |

Segovia
This excursion takes you approximately 60 miles
north to Segovia, a Castilian city rich in medieval
art and culture. Dominating the scene is the impressive
Roman Aqueduct, which dates back more than two thousand
years to when Segovia was a Roman military base.
Other visual treats include numerous Romanesque
churches, towers, convents, monasteries, museums
and palaces. |
|
| The city
is also home to the “Lady of the Spanish Cathedrals,”
Alcázar. Visible from miles around, Alcázar
is one of the finest Gothic monuments in Spain.
With its fairytale appearance set against the backdrop
of picturesque mountains, it is even rumored to
have been the inspiration for Walt Disney's Cinderella
castle. |
