Welcome
Dinner and City Tour
Students in Tenerife are able to jump right into
Spanish culture from the minute they arrive. The
first day, you will be invited to a welcome dinner
and fiesta, where you can get to know your teachers
and classmates. During the first week, you will
be escorted on a city tour where you will be introduced
to various cultural attractions as well as leisure-time
hot spots.
Dancing
and Singing Lessons
To further your immersion into the Spanish culture,
Latin dance and singing lessons are available for
free once a week to all students. During this time
you will get the unique opportunity to learn the
steps and songs of Spanish music, including the
Sevillanas, the Charro and the Paso Doble.
Intercambio
Get together with local students to practice your
Spanish and meet new friends!
Sports
Students can go swimming for less than $2 at a pool
down the street. A gym with aerobics classes, tennis,
horseback riding, and golf is also available for
a small fee.
Beaches
Take advantage of Tenerife’s excellent location
by spending your free time at the beach—like
Playa Jardín, Playa San Telmo, and Playa
Martiánez, only minutes from the school’s
door.
Teide
Natural Park
The highest peak in Spain, Mt. Teide overlooks the
whole island of Tenerife. Teide National Park gives
visitors the rare chance to experience the diversity
of the island’s natural landscape from high
above. The extreme altitude and temperatures in
this area make for plant and animal life that is
unique to the island.
Visitors
can hike or take a cable car up the mountain to
see its gigantic volcanic crater. From the top of
Teide, you’ll witness the majestic beauty
of the Canary Islands spread out around you.
La
Orotava
La Orotava is a classic example of an old Canary
town. Built around a banana plantation, the town
displays traditional architecture and unique island
living. Here you can visit the Casa de los Balcones,
an authentic Canary house with tiled roofs and palm-treed
villas;
La Hijuela
del Botánico, a botanic garden with over
3000 tropical and subtropical plants; and the Jardín
Victoria, a beautiful garden with paths leading
to the Carrara Marble Mausoleum, designed by a French
architect in the 1800s. La Orotava’s location
also gives visitors the opportunity to visit three
black-sand beaches, a distinctive feature of the
Canary Islands.
La
Laguna y Anaga
The second-largest city on the island, La Laguna
is the cultural and religious capital of Tenerife.
This modern locale is situated in the lush Aguere
Valley, and contains the island’s main university
as well as the home of the Catholic Bishop. Visitors
can see the traditional architecture of classic
churches as well as tour a variety of museums.
Forming
the city’s backdrop are the Anaga Mountains,
gloriously green and famous for their rich botanical
treasures and unique villages.
La
Masca
La Masca is a rural village in the Teno Mountains
on the northwest part of the island. Those who visit
will hear folklore of pirates and treasures still
stashed somewhere in the lush, green mountains.
A rarely visited village, La Masca will give you
the extraordinary experience of seeing the true,
traditional Canary Island life from the days of
old.
La
Gomera
La Gomera shares with Tenerife the unique history
of being a launching point for Columbus’ journeys.
The island is architecturally and culturally rich,
and its populace prides itself on the preservation
of its land and culture. Known locally as “Magic
Island,” La Gomera boasts a topography of
winding ravines, picturesque valleys and rich greenery.
Visitors
can take advantage of numerous hiking trails into
the lush Garajonay National Park, one of more than
10 preserves on the island. Further towards the
coast, the intimate beaches of La Gomera offer spectacular
views of Tenerife and the sparkling ocean in between.
