The capital of Uruguay, Montevideo is known as the smaller, more laid-back city of its big sister, Buenos Aires, Argentina. But that doesn’t mean you’ll find nothing to do! The city is home to half of the country’s 3.5 million inhabitants and offers a wide range of cultural activities year-round. As a Spanish student in Montevideo, you’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of museums, theater, concerts, international exhibitions, and popular festivities. In fact, Carnival in Montevideo lasts 40 nights from February to March, the longest in the world!
Montevideo’s location along the Rio de la Plata is spectacular and the riverfront pedestrian walkway is a must for locals and visitors. In summer, beaches are crowded as travelers come from all around. Uruguayans are nature-lovers and the city is full of enormous parks and green areas. The nightlife scene is concentrated in the old town—where the Spanish school is located—and offers a growing number of pubs, restaurants, tango shows, night clubs, and bars.

Activities and Excursions |
|
| |
|
| |
| |
Students in Montevideo not only learn the Spanish language, but also have the opportunity to discover Uruguay’s artistic, historic and literary legacy. The staff at the school believes that language and culture go hand in hand, which is why they offer a program rich in cultural content.
Spanish students can take advantage of at least two organized activities per week, which allow you a first-hand glimpse into Uruguay’s customs and traditions, history, music, sights, and much more. Activities range from visiting the Torres Garcia museum to touring local vineyards to barbecuing on the school’s rooftop terrace. Some of the excursions offered by the school are described below.
 |
| |
|
Estadio Centenario
This emblematic stadium in Montevideo hosted the First Wold Cup ever. With thousands of energetic fans dressed in their favorite team’s colors, a soccer game here is a truly exciting experience. Don’t forget to ask for the typical “stadium menu” that includes churros, chorizos, and Pilsen beer!
|
|
| Before or after the game you can visit the surrounding Parque Batlle, an open-air museum with sculptures from some of the most prestigious Uruguayan artists and reproductions of other classics from around the world. |

Parque Rodó
With a unique combination of avant grade constructions and refurbished colonial buildings, of museum masterpieces and design stores, Parque Rodó is the place to go if you are interested in architecture. Our guided tour ends with a paddle-boat ride in the park’s lake and a walk along the promenade.
|
|
| In the evening, don’t miss the sun slowly setting on the horizon, preferably while eating bizcochos and drinking traditional mate. |

Ciudad Vieja
Montevideo’s old town is full of history. With stories to tell of every little fountain, house, and alleyway, a guided excursion of this area helps students re-discover the very same streets they walk every day to school. Art and history museums, stylish colonial houses, el Cabildo (former site of the parliament), and the Metropolitan Cathedral—among others—combine to help students gain a greater understanding of Uruguayan cultural heritage.

Carnival, Tango, and Concerts
The true cultural life of the city is expressed in its multitudes of parades, performances, tango shows, rock concerts, folk music events, and celebrations. Going to a bar or theater after a day of hard study is the best way to continue practicing Spanish while learning about the country in a relaxed and enjoyable way.
|
|
| Once a week the school invites you to dance tango, learn to drum the basic rhythms of Afro-Uruguayan Candombe, or go to a concert while trying a cup of medio y medio or grapa (local drinks). |

El Cerro
In one of our most popular excursions, a trip to the top of El Cerro (the Hill) provides students with both a wonderful view and some social insight. While on the way to an amazing panorama of the city, visitors traverse a simpler, more old-fashioned side of the city that foreigners seldom get to see.

Spanish & DELE
The DELE (Diploma de Espanol como Lengua Extranjera) is the only certificate for non-native speakers recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. This diploma is of great international value for those who plan to attend a Spanish university or work in a Spanish-speaking environment.
This program is based on one-on-one lessons to prepare you for the DELE. It takes into account your prior knowledge and specifically trains you in all relevant aspects of the exam: listening comprehension, text comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and oral expression. The school offers DELE preparation courses for all three levels: Certificado Inicial (CIE), Diploma Básico (DBE), and Diploma Superior (DSE). The number of hours you need to prepare for the exam depends upon your current level and the DELE level you wish to attain. Classes start every Monday.

| “I had a great time during my five weeks at the academy. The teachers are very well qualified, the study material is interesting and the exercises not only teach you Spanish but a whole lot of things about this country, its culture and history. I was really looking forward to classes every day. I can recommend [this school] without hesitating.” |

| “I came to the school as a non-traditional student: middle aged and knowing no Spanish. Everyone has been very attentive in helping me make the adjustment to a Spanish-speaking world. The professors are expert in encouraging and coaxing language learning. When I have requested it, they have helped me prepare for day-to-day activities like getting a haircut or buying a cell phone. But most of all, by their constant encouragement they have given me the confidence to use Spanish in my interaction with the Uruguayan people. My advice is come to Uruguay to learn Spanish, but do it the easy way – start your language learning while you are young!” |
