Included in the program are an array of fun activities and excursions
to expose you to Venezuelan culture and provide you with opportunities
to practice the Spanish language. The school offers such activities
as salsa dance lessons, windsurfing, diving, horseback riding,
golf, surfing, yoga, hiking, and traditional Venezuelan cooking.
In addition, three weekly excursions to interesting sights around
the island will help you learn about and adapt to your new environment.
Some of these are listed below.
Pampatar
A quaint and beautiful town founded in the 1530s,
Pampatar was named after a Guaqueri Indian word
meaning “town of salt.” Salt, revered
as “white gold,” was a strong draw for
Spanish settlers. Pampatar’s most famous edifice
is the castle of San Carlos, in the center of town
on the waterfront. Built in 1662 by the Spanish,
the castle was constructed entirely of coral!
The
Fortress Santiago de la Caranta and the Temple of
Cristo del Buen Viaje are also worthwhile sights.
La
Asunción
The capital of the state of Nueva Esparta and approximately
15 minutes from Porlamar, La Asunción has
a population of 15,000. This town is home to many
government employees and politicians as well as
a great number of artists and intellectuals. The
downtown area features well-preserved colonial architecture.
The beautifully restored Museum of Nueva Cadiz exhibits
ancient artifacts, an impressive model of Margarita
Island, and works of art by modern painters and
sculptors. La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de
la Asunción, one of the oldest churches in
Venezuela, and Castillo de Santa Rosa are popular
stops as well.
El
Valle del Espíritu Santo
With a lovely church and an impressive statue of
Our Lady of the Valley, those on pilgrimage travel
here year-round, but especially for festivities
in September. The stained-glass windows and twin-towered
chapel are points of exceptional beauty.
Juan
Griego Located on the north coast of Margarita Island, the fishing village of Juan Griego is a must visit. The town has small, picturesque beaches and is known for its fresh fish, which can be bought from local fishermen or enjoyed at one of the restaurants on the beach. Guarding the town is the ancient Fortress of La Galera, which cuts through a bay full of fishing boats. Like all of Margarita Island, Juan Griego is a duty-free port, and thus a popular shopping spot.
La
Restinga Lagoon National Park
Dense mangrove forests enfold a watery labyrinth
navigable by experienced boatmen offering their
services to visitors. Fall under the spell of the
lush beauty and romantic folklore detailed with
flourish by the boatmen as they navigate hidden
passages and tunnels. La Restinga is alive with
nesting birds such as pelicans and parrots, and
marine life including red starfish and seahorses.
Beach
Activities
Margarita Island boasts some of the most beautiful
beaches in the world with opportunities for swimming,
fishing, shopping, dining, or just relaxing and
taking in the natural scenery. If windsurfing or
sailing piques your interest, check out Playa El
Yaque, internationally known for its steady winds
and tranquil waters. For surfing enthusiasts Playa
Parguito is the spot, as strong waves of medium
size roll in year-round.
